Welcome to my website!
I hold the Chair for Practical Philosophy and Ethics at LMU Munich.
Before coming to Munich I held the Chair for Practical Philosophy at the University of Bern in Switzerland. I have held various visiting positions: I was a visiting scholar at Harvard University and a Feodor-Lynen Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley, a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Ethics and Public Affairs of the Murphy Institute at Tulane University in New Orleans, a Visiting Research Professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and at the University of Vienna, as well as a Hedda Andersson Visiting Professor at the University of Lund. I was also elected as a Fudan Scholar at Fudan University in Shanghai.
In 2024, I was elected to the Academia Europaea and to the Institut International de Philosophie. I received the Robert Papazian Essay Prize in 2018, and the Prinzessin Therese von Bayern Preis in 2025 as well as two awards for excellence in teaching in 2018 and 2023.
My work is situated in the fields of moral psychology, normative ethics, and normative theorizing more generally. My current research topics include the ethics of intimate relationships, the normative significance of personal projects, meaning in life, relational morality and particular kinds of relational wrongs, autonomy, the normative dimensions and pathologies of empathy, and particular emotions and their appropriateness.
Feel free to get in touch if you share some of my research interests.
